Ninth grade Biology is the entry point into high school science in the traditional US sequence, and for many students it is the first course graded on laboratory reports and data analysis rather than worksheets. It covers cell structure and transport, biochemistry, cellular respiration and photosynthesis, DNA structure and protein synthesis, Mendelian genetics, evolution and ecology.
In New York this course is the Living Environment, assessed by a Regents exam with a required laboratory component; elsewhere it is a district or state end-of-course assessment. The common difficulty is not memorising vocabulary but explaining processes in sequence — students who can describe how a change at the molecular level produces an effect on the whole organism are the ones who score well.
