Computer Science

Grade 8 · Canadian Curriculum (General)

Grade 8 coding is the bridge into secondary computer studies. Students work with nested data structures, functions with parameters and return values, string and file handling, and standard algorithms such as linear and binary search and simple sorts.

Theory covers boolean logic, binary arithmetic and hexadecimal, network protocols, and cyber security threats and defences. Students typically complete a substantial project of their own design and document it properly.

Curriculum Breakdown

Important Topics

  • Functions & ParametersModular code with parameters, return values and reuse.
  • Standard AlgorithmsLinear and binary search, simple sorts and why efficiency matters.
  • Data StructuresNested lists and dictionaries used in a real project.
  • Boolean LogicLogical operators, truth tables and complex conditions.
  • Networks & SecurityProtocols, encryption, cyber threats and defensive practice.
  • Independent ProjectDesigning, building, testing and documenting an original program.
