Grade 9 English in Canada (ENG1W or ENG1D in Ontario, with equivalents in other provinces) begins secondary literary study. Students read a novel, a Shakespeare play or extracts, short stories, poetry and non-fiction, and analyze how writers create meaning.

Writing focuses on the literary essay and on persuasive and informational forms, with attention to thesis, structure and integrating evidence. Ontario and several other provinces now embed Indigenous texts and perspectives as a required part of the course.
