Grade 5 · US Curriculum Standards
Fifth grade is the last elementary year and works close to middle school demand. Students analyze how a narrator's point of view shapes a story, compare the structure of two texts, and explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points.
Writing covers opinion essays with logically ordered reasons, informative essays with formatting and concrete detail, and narratives with pacing and dialogue. Research projects require multiple sources and a summary in the student's own words, and grammar covers perfect verb tenses, conjunctions and correlative pairs.
