Second grade shifts from learning to read toward reading to learn. Students decode multisyllabic words and common irregular spellings, read grade-level text fluently, and use context to work out unfamiliar vocabulary.
Comprehension moves into central message, lesson or moral, comparing two versions of the same story, and using text features such as headings and captions to locate information. Writing produces structured paragraphs with a clear topic sentence and supporting details, and students learn to revise with help rather than submitting a first draft.
