Mathematics

Year 7 is the first year of Key Stage 3 in Wales and the year arithmetic becomes algebra. Pupils secure the four operations with integers, decimals, fractions and negative numbers, then start using letters to represent numbers — simplifying expressions, substituting into formulae and solving one- and two-step equations.

Geometry covers angle rules, properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, area, perimeter and the beginnings of coordinate geometry. Statistics work covers averages, range and drawing and reading a range of charts.

Under Curriculum for Wales this sits in the Mathematics and Numeracy Area of Learning and Experience, with numeracy also assessed across other subjects — so the practical, in-context side of the work matters as much as the technique.
