Year 10 is the first GCSE year in Wales, where students take WJEC GCSE Biology as part of the separate sciences or Biology content within the Double Award. Early units cover cells, movement of substances, respiration, photosynthesis and digestion.

The demand rises sharply from Key Stage 3: students explain processes rather than describe them, and the specified practicals are assessed both in the practical component and through data questions in the written papers.
