WJEC GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature are separate qualifications in Wales, each fully examined with no coursework, plus a non-graded spoken language endorsement.
English Language assesses reading of unseen 20th and 21st century fiction and non-fiction, including comparison across texts, alongside narrative, descriptive and transactional writing produced under exam conditions. English Literature covers a Shakespeare play, a 19th century novel, a contemporary text, the WJEC poetry anthology and unseen poetry.
The two papers reward different habits — Language rewards precision about method and effect, Literature rewards a sustained argument. Learning to switch cleanly between them is the single most useful thing a tutor can build.
