WJEC A-Level Chemistry in Wales runs on the modular AS and A2 structure, covering physical and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and analysis, and including an assessed practical examination in addition to the written units.
The practical unit is the feature that most distinguishes the Welsh route from the linear English specifications. It assesses technique directly — accurate titration, sensible recording, and the judgement to identify which measurement limits the accuracy of a result — rather than testing knowledge about practicals in writing. Preparation for it cannot be done from notes, and learners without regular laboratory access are at a real disadvantage.
