Year 6 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 6 English aims to leave pupils ready for secondary study. Reading covers classic and contemporary fiction, poetry and demanding non-fiction, with pupils expected to analyse language, structure and theme and to support every point with textual evidence.
Writing is assessed across a full range of genres, with pupils selecting vocabulary, grammar and structure deliberately for effect. Formal and informal registers, the passive voice, semi-colons, colons and hyphens are all taught explicitly.
Oracy work includes formal debate and extended presentation, and pupils are expected to proofread and edit to a high standard independently.
