English

Year 5 · Curriculum for Wales

Year 5 English asks pupils to read challenging texts and comment on how the writer achieves an effect — word choice, structure, viewpoint — rather than only what the text says. Comparison across texts becomes a regular expectation.

Writing covers a full range of genres with attention to audience and purpose. Pupils learn relative clauses, modal verbs, brackets, dashes and commas for parenthesis, and are expected to control cohesion across a longer piece.

Redrafting is taken seriously at this stage: planning, drafting, evaluating against success criteria and improving is the working method, not an optional extra.
