Year 5 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 5 English asks pupils to read challenging texts and comment on how the writer achieves an effect (word choice, structure, viewpoint) rather than only what the text says. Comparison across texts becomes a regular expectation.
Writing covers a full range of genres with attention to audience and purpose. Pupils learn relative clauses, modal verbs, brackets, dashes and commas for parenthesis, and are expected to control cohesion across a longer piece.
Redrafting is taken seriously at this stage: planning, drafting, evaluating against success criteria and improving is the working method, not an optional extra.
