Year 5 computing brings in more sophisticated program design — nested loops, multiple variables, lists, and procedures that can be reused. Many pupils write their first lines of text-based code here, often in Python or a Python-like environment.
Pupils model real situations in spreadsheets using formulae and what-if scenarios, and evaluate how well their model represents reality.
Computer systems work covers how data is represented in binary, what happens inside a computer, and how networks route information — alongside a serious treatment of online safety, privacy settings and the reliability of online sources.
