Year 4 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 4 English expects pupils to read a wider range of texts independently and to justify their views with reference to the text. Comprehension work introduces summarising a passage and comparing how two texts treat the same subject.
Writing develops sustained structure across several paragraphs, with fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and apostrophes for possession taught explicitly. Pupils learn to edit and improve their own writing rather than only proofread it.
Under Curriculum for Wales, pupils continue to develop Welsh alongside English, and oracy assessment includes explaining, persuading and discussing.
