Year 3 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 3 English broadens reading into longer chapter books, poetry and non-fiction. Comprehension work focuses on retrieving information accurately, inferring meaning and explaining an opinion with reference to the text.
Writing is taught by genre, with paragraphs introduced as a structural tool. Children learn to use conjunctions, prepositions and adverbs to link ideas, and to use inverted commas for direct speech.
Spelling covers prefixes, suffixes and the first tranche of statutory word lists, and handwriting becomes consistently joined. Oracy continues to be assessed in its own right.
