English

Year 2 · Curriculum for Wales

Year 2 English expects reading with accuracy and expression, and comprehension that goes beyond recall — inferring how a character feels, explaining why something happened, and finding evidence in the text.

Writing becomes properly structured: children plan before writing, organise ideas into a beginning, middle and end, and use a wider range of punctuation including question marks, exclamation marks and commas in lists. Adjectives, conjunctions and varied sentence openers are taught explicitly.

Spelling moves onto common patterns, contractions and homophones, and handwriting develops toward joined letters.
