Year 1 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 1 mathematics in Wales consolidates number to 100. Children read, write and order numbers, understand place value in tens and ones, learn number bonds within 20, and use those bonds for quick addition and subtraction. Counting in twos, fives and tens starts the journey towards multiplication.
Measurement covers length, weight, capacity and time to the hour and half hour; money extends into recognising and combining coins. Geometry names common 2D and 3D shapes and describes their properties, while data work introduces simple pictograms and block graphs.
Number fluency built here is the single best predictor of how comfortable Year 2 and Year 3 feel, so short, regular practice pays off disproportionately.
