Computer Science

Higher

Higher Computing Science is assessed by an SQA exam and a substantial practical assignment covering both Software Design and Development and Database, Web and Information System Design.

The programming demand rises sharply from National 5: pupils work with parallel and two-dimensional arrays, records, sub-programs with parameter passing by value and by reference, standard algorithms such as linear search, count occurrences and find minimum/maximum, and modular design.

The systems side covers relational database design and complex SQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, data representation including floating-point and colour depth, security precautions and the environmental and legal implications of computing. Structured practice on standard algorithms and past-paper design questions is what moves grades here.
