View topicsHigher Chemistry covers Chemical Changes and Structure, Nature's Chemistry, Chemistry in Society and Researching Chemistry, examined by an SQA paper plus a 20-mark assignment.
The theory is considerably more abstract than National 5: bonding and intermolecular forces, periodic trends, enthalpy and Hess's law, equilibrium, reaction feasibility, oxidising and reducing agents, and a substantial organic chemistry section covering functional groups, reaction pathways and spectroscopy.
Calculations (enthalpy, percentage yield, atom economy and volumetric analysis) carry a lot of marks and are highly teachable. So is the skill of writing a reaction pathway from a named starting material, which is where many candidates lose easy marks.
Important Topics
- Bonding & StructureElectronegativity, intermolecular forces, periodic trends and their effect on properties.
- Enthalpy & Hess's LawEnergy changes, calorimetry, bond enthalpies and enthalpy cycles.
- Equilibrium & Reaction FeasibilityDynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier's principle and factors affecting reaction rate.
- Organic ChemistryFunctional groups, esters, fats, proteins, oxidation reactions and reaction pathways.
- Chemistry in SocietyPercentage yield, atom economy, oxidising and reducing agents and industrial processes.
- Analytical TechniquesVolumetric analysis, chromatography, colorimetry and spectroscopy.
- Researching ChemistryPractical skills, accuracy, and the researched written assignment.
