Higher
Higher Chemistry covers Chemical Changes and Structure, Nature's Chemistry, Chemistry in Society and Researching Chemistry, examined by an SQA paper plus a 20-mark assignment.
The theory is considerably more abstract than National 5: bonding and intermolecular forces, periodic trends, enthalpy and Hess's law, equilibrium, reaction feasibility, oxidising and reducing agents, and a substantial organic chemistry section covering functional groups, reaction pathways and spectroscopy.
Calculations — enthalpy, percentage yield, atom economy and volumetric analysis — carry a lot of marks and are highly teachable. So is the skill of writing a reaction pathway from a named starting material, which is where many candidates lose easy marks.
