Computer Science

Fourth Level · Curriculum for Excellence

Fourth Level Computing Science is essentially the National 5 course in preparation. Pupils write and refine programs in a text-based language — usually Python — using arrays, nested loops, functions with parameters, string operations and file handling, and follow a full design, implement, test, evaluate cycle.

Computer systems content covers binary and two's complement, floating-point representation, storage of images and sound, processor structure, and the environmental and security implications of computing. Database and web development units cover SQL queries, HTML, CSS and JavaScript basics.

The exam rewards precision — correct syntax, correct terminology, complete test tables — so working through past-paper style questions with feedback is the most effective form of support at this level.
