First Level · Curriculum for Excellence
Computing Science at First Level sits within the Technologies curriculum area. Pupils learn what an algorithm is by writing precise step-by-step instructions, then turn those instructions into simple programs using block-based tools such as Scratch or ScratchJr — including sequences, repetition and simple events.
Alongside programming, children learn to organise and search for information, create digital content such as documents and presentations, and understand the basics of staying safe online: passwords, personal information and knowing who to tell if something feels wrong.
The most valuable habit taught here is debugging — reading a program that doesn't work, finding the step that's wrong, and fixing it calmly.
