Mathematics

P6 · Northern Ireland Curriculum

P6 works with numbers to a million, powers of ten and decimals to three places. Long multiplication and short division are secured, and pupils meet primes, factors, multiples, squares and cubes.

Fraction work becomes demanding: adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, multiplying fractions, and moving fluently between fractions, decimals and percentages. Measures extends into area and volume formulae and unit conversion.

For pupils sitting the AQE or GL transfer tests at the start of P7, P6 is the year in which the underlying mathematics needs to become genuinely automatic — which is why targeted support here is so often decisive.
