Mathematics

CCEA A-Level Mathematics is the standard route in Northern Ireland and retains a modular structure: AS units taken in Year 13 count towards the final A-Level grade, with A2 units completing it in Year 14. Content covers Pure Mathematics alongside Applied Mathematics, which combines Mechanics and Statistics.

Because AS results contribute to the final grade, Year 13 carries real weight — a point that matters more in Northern Ireland than in England, where AS is decoupled. Northern Ireland's grammar school system also means many students arrive from a selective GCSE cohort with strong algebra, and the students who struggle are usually those who have not yet made the shift from practising technique to constructing an argument.
