Mathematics

P1 · Northern Ireland Curriculum

P1 is the first year of the Foundation Stage in Northern Ireland, and Mathematics and Numeracy here is taught almost entirely through play, practical activity and talk. Children learn to count reliably to ten and beyond, recognise numerals, and match a number to a quantity.

Sorting, matching and pattern-making underpin everything, and children compare size, length, weight and capacity using everyday language. Common 2D shapes and 3D objects are named, and position words such as behind, beside and under are used in real situations.

The Northern Ireland Curriculum deliberately keeps the Foundation Stage unhurried. What matters at P1 is that a child is confident and interested in number, not that they can record it on paper.
