Year 9 prepares directly for GCSE: genetics and inheritance are studied in more mathematical depth (including basic Punnett squares), and the periodic table's trends and patterns are explored properly for the first time. Forces and energy move into calculation-based problems rather than purely descriptive ones.

Ecology work covers population dynamics and human impact on ecosystems, and chemical reactions extend to reaction rates and writing balanced equations — genuinely GCSE-level skills introduced a year early so Year 10 can move faster.
