English — Year 4

British Curriculum · Ages 8-9

Year 4 extends reading stamina to longer texts and introduces fronted adverbials ("Later that day, she...") as a tool for varying sentence structure. Paragraphing becomes more consistent and purposeful, and expanded noun phrases ("the old, creaking door") add descriptive detail to writing.

Students also begin reading and performing plays and poems aloud with appropriate expression, and start developing an awareness of Standard English compared to informal or dialect speech.
