Mathematics — Grade 8

American Curriculum · Ages 13-14

Grade 8 is the bridge into high school algebra: linear equations and functions, and solving systems of two linear equations. Students formally study what a function is and how to represent one.

Geometry covers congruence and similarity through transformations (rotations, reflections, translations, dilations), the Pythagorean theorem, and volume of cylinders, cones and spheres. Scatter plots and bivariate data introduce a first look at statistical relationships between two variables.

Key topics covered

  • Linear Equations & Functions — Understanding and representing functions; systems of two linear equations.
  • Transformations — Congruence and similarity via rotation, reflection, translation and dilation.
  • Pythagorean Theorem — Introduction and application to real problems.
  • Volume — Cylinders, cones and spheres.
  • Bivariate Data — Scatter plots and the relationship between two variables.
