Eleventh grade Chemistry is generally AP Chemistry or an honors course taken after the first-year chemistry class. It revisits familiar ground — atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry — at a substantially higher level, then moves into the material that defines the course: kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics and electrochemistry.

Equilibrium is where most students lose ground, because ICE tables, Ka and Kb calculations, buffers and titration curves compound on one another, and an error early in a problem carries all the way through. The AP exam rewards students who can justify an answer with particle-level reasoning rather than a memorised rule, and the required laboratory investigations feed directly into the free-response section.
