Chemistry

Grade 11 Chemistry (SCH3U in Ontario, Chemistry 20 in Alberta, Chemistry 11 in British Columbia) is the university-preparation course that separates students who continue in the physical sciences from those who do not. It builds on the chemistry strands of Grade 9 and 10 Science and introduces the quantitative work that defines the subject.

Matter, bonding and periodic trends come first, then the mole and quantities in chemical reactions — stoichiometry, limiting reagents and percentage yield — followed by solutions and solubility, gases and atmospheric chemistry, and an introduction to organic chemistry. Almost every student who struggles here struggles with the mole concept specifically, and time spent making that secure pays back across the whole of Grade 12.
