Grade 3 is a provincial assessment year in Ontario and a consolidation year across Canada. Students read a range of fiction and non-fiction independently, identify main ideas and supporting details, make inferences, and use text features such as headings and captions to find information.

Writing is organized into paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting detail, and students learn to plan, draft and revise rather than submitting a first attempt. Vocabulary work covers prefixes, suffixes, synonyms and using context to work out unfamiliar words.
