Grade 1 language work in Canada is built on oral communication and systematic phonics. Children learn letter-sound relationships, blend sounds to read simple words, build a bank of high-frequency words, and read simple texts with growing confidence.
Writing develops from letters and labels into simple sentences with capital letters and periods. Provincial curricula differ in wording — Ontario organizes this as Foundations of Language and Comprehension, while other provinces use their own strand names — but the underlying expectations at this stage are consistent across the country.
