Grade 6 · US Curriculum Standards
Sixth grade opens middle school English with a sharper analytical focus. Students cite textual evidence to support analysis, determine theme and how it develops, analyze how a sentence or chapter fits the whole, and trace an argument and evaluate whether the evidence actually supports it.
Writing covers argument with clear reasons and credible sources, explanatory writing using definition, classification and comparison, and narrative with sequencing and reflection. Students learn to plan, revise and edit as separate stages, and grammar covers pronoun case, intensive pronouns and varied sentence patterns.
