Science

Grade 10 · US Curriculum Standards

Tenth grade science is Chemistry in the traditional sequence and Biology or Chemistry in a Physics-first school, with honors sections running alongside the standard course in most districts. This is usually the year the mathematical demand of science rises sharply, whichever subject a student is taking.

It is also the decision year for Advanced Placement. Performance in tenth grade determines whether a student is recommended for AP Biology, AP Chemistry or AP Physics in eleventh, and those recommendations are made well before the year ends. Full syllabus detail for each course sits on the Biology, Chemistry and Physics pages for this grade.

Curriculum Breakdown

Important Topics

  • Chemistry RouteThe standard tenth grade course in the traditional sequence.
  • Biology RouteWhere a Physics-first sequence places biology in tenth grade.
  • Honors & Standard TracksHow the two differ in pace, depth and mathematical treatment.
  • Mathematical DemandProportional reasoning, algebra and dimensional analysis in science.
  • AP RecommendationHow tenth grade results decide Advanced Placement access.
  • Laboratory AssessmentFormal reporting, error analysis and practical technique.
  • PSAT & Standardised TestingWhere science reasoning appears in standardised assessment.
