Mathematics

GCSE · WJEC / Eduqas

In Wales, most learners take two separate WJEC GCSEs in mathematics: GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy. Both are tiered — Foundation, Intermediate and Higher — which is a distinctive feature of the Welsh system and gives a wider range of targeted entry options than the two-tier model used in England.

GCSE Mathematics assesses formal technique: algebraic manipulation, quadratics, simultaneous equations, graphs, trigonometry, circle theorems, similarity, vectors, probability and statistics. GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy assesses the same underlying mathematics applied to unfamiliar real-world contexts — finance, measurement, scale, rates and data interpretation.

The three-tier structure means entry decisions matter. A tutor who knows the WJEC papers can help judge the right tier and target the specific grade boundaries that decision creates.
