Mathematics

Year 5 · Curriculum for Wales

Year 5 mathematics works with numbers to a million, powers of ten, and decimals to three places. Long multiplication and short division are secured, and pupils meet prime numbers, factors, multiples, squares and cubes.

Fraction work becomes demanding: adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, multiplying fractions, and converting fluently between fractions, decimals and percentages. Measurement extends into area and volume formulae and unit conversion including imperial units.

Geometry covers angle measurement with a protractor, properties of regular and irregular polygons, reflection and translation. Data work introduces line graphs and timetables.
