Year 4 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 4 mathematics is dominated by one target: knowing all times tables to 12 x 12 fluently, along with the matching division facts. Everything else in the year — long multiplication, division, fractions, area — leans on that fluency.
Place value extends to four-digit numbers and to decimals in tenths and hundredths. Children learn to convert between fractions and decimals, calculate area by counting squares, and work with perimeter, and they meet negative numbers in the context of temperature.
Geometry covers symmetry, coordinates in the first quadrant and translation; data work moves into time graphs and interpreting more complex tables.
