Year 3 mathematics moves into three-digit numbers and formal written methods. Place value extends to 1,000, column addition and subtraction are introduced properly, and the 3, 4 and 8 times tables join the tables learned in the Foundation Phase.

Fractions are taught systematically for the first time — recognising, comparing and finding unit and non-unit fractions of shapes and quantities. Measurement covers length, mass, capacity, money and time including the 24-hour clock, and geometry introduces right angles, perpendicular and parallel lines.

This is a common point for gaps to open up in Wales as elsewhere, particularly in times tables. Catching them in Year 3 is far easier than catching them in Year 5.
