Mathematics

Third Level maths (typically S1 to S2) is where arithmetic becomes algebra. Pupils work confidently with negative numbers, indices, fractions, decimals and percentages, then apply that fluency to expressions, formulae and linear equations — collecting like terms, expanding brackets and solving for an unknown.

Geometry expands into angle rules with parallel lines, Pythagoras' theorem, circle properties, area and volume of composite shapes, scale drawings and transformations. Statistics covers frequency tables, the mean, median, mode and range, and interpreting graphs critically.

Third Level is the foundation the National 4 and National 5 courses are built on. Pupils who solidify algebra here almost always find National 5 manageable; pupils who don't, generally struggle with it.
