Mathematics

National 5 Mathematics is the key Scottish qualification for progression to Higher and for most college and employment routes. It is examined in two SQA papers — one non-calculator, one calculator — covering Expressions and Formulae, Relationships, and Applications.

The course demands genuine algebraic fluency: factorising, completing the square, solving quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, and changing the subject of a formula. Trigonometry extends to the sine and cosine rules and the area of a triangle, and statistics introduces standard deviation.

The non-calculator paper is where marks are most often lost. Regular timed practice on surds, indices and algebraic manipulation, with a tutor correcting method rather than just answers, changes results more than anything else.
