National 5
National 5 Biology covers Cell Biology, Multicellular Organisms, and Life on Earth, assessed by a written SQA exam and an assignment worth 20 marks that pupils research and write up under controlled conditions.
Content includes cell structure and transport, DNA, enzymes, respiration, photosynthesis, body systems, control and communication, inheritance, ecosystems, biodiversity and food security. Data handling and experimental design questions appear throughout the paper.
Marks are frequently lost on extended-response questions and on interpreting unfamiliar data. Practising those two question types specifically is usually the fastest route to a better grade.
