Mathematics

National 4

National 4 Mathematics is an internally assessed, unit-based course with no final SQA exam. It is built around three units — Expressions and Formulae, Relationships, and Numeracy — plus an Added Value Unit assessment that pulls the whole course together.

The content covers surds and indices at an introductory level, algebraic expressions, gradient, linear equations, angle and circle properties, area and volume, statistics and probability, alongside the practical numeracy every pupil needs. Pupils must pass every unit to pass the course.

Because assessment is continuous rather than one exam, steady support through the year matters more than revision cramming — and pupils who pass National 4 comfortably are often well placed to attempt National 5 the following year.
