National 4
National 4 English is assessed internally across two units — Analysis and Evaluation, and Creation and Production — plus an Added Value Unit based on a piece of research the pupil presents. There is no final exam.
Pupils read and respond to a range of texts, including at least one Scottish text, and produce both written and spoken work: a piece of writing for each of the main purposes, a solo talk, and participation in group discussion. Literacy skills are assessed alongside the English content.
The course is pass/fail at unit level, so the most effective tutoring focuses on getting each assessment over the line first time and building the confidence to progress to National 5.
