Fourth Level · Curriculum for Excellence
Fourth Level maths (typically S2 to S3) is effectively National 5 preparation. Algebra becomes the centre of the course: factorising, solving quadratic equations, changing the subject of a formula, simultaneous equations and working with straight-line graphs including gradient and intercept.
Geometry covers Pythagoras in three dimensions, trigonometry in right-angled triangles, arcs and sectors, volume of solids, similarity and vectors. Statistics extends into standard deviation, scatter graphs and lines of best fit, alongside compound percentage and financial maths.
Pupils who arrive at National 5 already fluent in factorising and rearranging formulae have a very different experience of the course from those who don't — which is why targeted Fourth Level tutoring is so effective.
