English

Fourth Level · Curriculum for Excellence

Fourth Level English works at close to National 5 standard. Pupils study a Scottish text in depth, write critical essays that argue a line about theme or character with quotation and analysis, and tackle Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation papers under timed conditions.

Writing develops into a portfolio-style pair: one broadly creative piece and one broadly discursive, each drafted, marked and redrafted. Pupils learn how to structure an essay paragraph properly — point, evidence, analysis, link — which is the single most transferable skill in the course.

Spoken language is assessed as a pass/fail component, so a prepared solo talk and confident participation in group discussion are practised deliberately.
