Fourth Level · Curriculum for Excellence
Fourth Level English works at close to National 5 standard. Pupils study a Scottish text in depth, write critical essays that argue a line about theme or character with quotation and analysis, and tackle Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation papers under timed conditions.
Writing develops into a portfolio-style pair: one broadly creative piece and one broadly discursive, each drafted, marked and redrafted. Pupils learn how to structure an essay paragraph properly (point, evidence, analysis, link) which is the single most transferable skill in the course.
Spoken language is assessed as a pass/fail component, so a prepared solo talk and confident participation in group discussion are practised deliberately.
