Advanced Higher Mathematics is the most demanding school-level maths qualification in Scotland and is the natural preparation for a maths-heavy degree. It is assessed by two SQA papers plus a project-style component in some centres.

The course extends calculus into implicit and parametric differentiation, integration by parts and partial fractions, and differential equations. It introduces complex numbers, matrices, sequences and series, the binomial theorem, proof by induction and contradiction, and number theory including the Euclidean algorithm.

The step up is real: Advanced Higher expects mathematical argument, not just calculation. Working through proof and problem-solving questions with someone who can critique the reasoning — not just the answer — is the most valuable form of support at this level.
