Mathematics

Second Level · Curriculum for Excellence

Second Level numeracy (roughly P5 to P7) is the bridge into secondary maths. Place value extends to decimals and large numbers, all four operations are consolidated with formal written methods, and the links between fractions, decimals and percentages are made explicit so pupils can move between them fluently.

New ground includes negative numbers, multiples, factors and prime numbers, ratio and proportion, area and volume, angle measurement with a protractor, and coordinates in the first quadrant. Data work moves into line graphs, averages and the beginnings of probability.

Because this is the level the S1 curriculum assumes, gaps here surface quickly in secondary. Focused tutoring in P6 and P7 is some of the highest-value support a family can arrange.
