First Level · Curriculum for Excellence
First Level sciences move from noticing to explaining. Children study life cycles and habitats, classify living things into groups, investigate the properties and changes of materials, and meet forces, sound, light and simple electrical circuits as things that can be tested.
Earth and space work covers the solar system, day and night, the seasons and weather patterns. Throughout, pupils plan fair tests, decide what to measure, and record results in tables and charts — the skills side of Curriculum for Excellence matters as much as the content.
Tutoring at this level usually focuses on scientific vocabulary and on writing up an investigation clearly, which is where most pupils need the most support.
