Mathematics

First Level numeracy (roughly P2 to P4) is where number work becomes systematic. Children extend place value to hundreds and then thousands, develop mental strategies for addition and subtraction, and move into written methods. Multiplication and division are built from the 2, 5 and 10 tables outwards until the core facts are quick and reliable.

Fractions appear as halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and amounts; measurement covers length, weight, capacity and time on both analogue and digital clocks; and money moves into calculating change. Shape work introduces angles, symmetry and simple coordinates, while data handling covers tally marks, bar graphs and Venn diagrams.
