Early Level · Curriculum for Excellence

Early Level numeracy (P1, and the pre-school year before it) is where children build the foundations everything else rests on: counting reliably, recognising numbers to 20, and understanding that the last number counted tells you how many there are. Curriculum for Excellence keeps this deliberately practical — number is met through play, songs, real objects and everyday routines rather than worksheets.

Alongside number, children sort and match objects, recognise simple patterns, use the language of size, length and weight, name common 2D shapes and 3D objects, and start talking about time in terms of daily events. Money work begins with recognising coins and paying for things in play shops.

A tutor at Early Level works almost entirely through talk and hands-on activity — the goal is confident, unhurried number sense, not speed.
