P6 · Northern Ireland Curriculum

P6 Language and Literacy asks pupils to read challenging texts and comment on how a writer achieves an effect — word choice, structure, viewpoint — rather than only what the text says. Comparison across texts becomes routine.

Writing covers a full range of genres with attention to audience and purpose. Pupils learn relative clauses, modal verbs, brackets, dashes and commas for parenthesis, and control cohesion across a longer piece.

Comprehension technique matters particularly in P6 for pupils preparing for transfer tests, where reading accurately under time pressure is as important as the reading itself.
